It was, at best, a marginal weather window, which has now closed.
Looking forward a week, there is no reasonable patch to head south. The summer is getting on and the crew have commitments next month so, with a great deal of disappointment, Alex has decided they won’t be going south this season.
He hasn’t given up entirely – the plan now is to keep the boat in NZ over the winter and try again next Nov/Dec. This new plan, of course, will depend on DoC permits, crew availability, and (as always!) the weather.
In the meantime, Alex and crew will bring the boat up to Christchurch where I will join Rusalka for a bit of late summer cruising. Then we’ll find a winter berth for her somewhere in the Marlborough Sounds and hopefully fly over to do some winter sailing as well.
I’ll post to the blog as we do our cruising, so stay tuned…
