The wispy cirrus clouds didn’t result in a blow at sea level on Monday, the day of departure from Stewart Island. Caught in a sandwich of light winds between systems, Rusalka motor-sailed for most of the day, until the wind filled from behind in the evening.

They had a fairly bouncy night, with waves from a different direction than the wind, and had to gybe a few times, but by morning it was a steady beam reach and settled waves. The wind eased again by evening, but a thick fog settled around them.

As they neared Enderby Island, the northernmost in the Auckland Islands group, they had a bit of a problem with the engine (no water coming out of the exhaust), but managed to sort it out quickly. They finally dropped the pick around 10:30pm and enjoyed a well-deserved tipple.

Now the adventure begins!
