We’ve been in Nelson for a week now, waiting for crew and a weather window.  But that doesn’t mean we’ve been idle!

I’ve been making regular trips into Nelson (a 15min walk along a pretty riverside path) for odds and sods and last minute provisions.

A highlight was finding a Ukrainian food stall at the Saturday Market and buying a piece of “Bird’s Milk Cake” (Ptichye Moloko) for a morning tea treat. We’d previously tasted these delicious cakes in Ukraine.

Alex decided to get the life raft serviced as it was just about due and there is a local service agent 5min walk away.  We got to see the inside of the raft and the supplies that are provided, which we’d never seen in our own raft before.  I hope to never see the inside of the life raft again!

We did more boat chores (set up inner forestay and storm jib, serviced the Hydrovane, serviced the toilet pump, applied RainEx to the windscreen, checked bilge and speed log, restarted the watermaker, topped up the fuel tanks, reactivated the Iridium system,...) and of course, started seriously monitoring the weather forecasts.  In addition to Predictwind, Alex will be consulting Bob McDavitt (MetBob) again for this crossing.

Today was washing day and boat cleaning day to get ready for our crew, who will arrive tomorrow.

When will they leave?  Well that’s still up in the air.  Maybe the day after tomorrow, maybe a week away.  Stay tuned...
